Know the limits of your abilities so you can exceed them!
My name is Katarzyna Rogowiec. From my own experience, I know that almost anything is possible. I share this experience to inspire not only people with disabilities but also those still waiting for their “once-in-a-lifetime chance.”
I was born in Rabka in 1977. At the age of three, I lost both arms in a farming accident. But that never stopped me from being independent.
When my handwork teacher agreed with my mom that “some works” can not be make by Katie (“because she can not sew napkins without using hands”) I decided to prove, that it is not like that – I learned to sew using my teeth. And that’s how it stuck. Without hands, I can accomplish more than able-bodied people waiting for their chance in life.
What I’ve been through and experienced has taught me one thing: change begins with a decision. That’s why I share my journey on this website – not to prove anything to anyone, but to show that limitations often exist only in our heads. I believe these stories can be an impetus to action for both people with disabilities and those who postpone life, waiting for the “perfect moment.” Such a moment doesn’t exist. Instead, there are values that lead to the goal—simple things, in fact—and these are what our lives are made of. It’s enough to add them together, and that’s what I wish for you with all my heart.
The unequal opportunities for people with disabilities, which I have experienced for 30 years, have prompted me to take action to improve this state of affairs. The Avanti Foundation was entered into the National Court Register in September 2010. Its goals are extensive and challenging, but I believe that the actions we intend to take will bring us closer to achieving them.
